HISTORY

Lions Clubs was started in 1917 by a Chicago area businessman by the name of Melvin Jones. In 1925 Lions were given the challenge that would set their primary course of service ever since. This happened when Helen Keller spoke at the 1925 International Convention and stated "Will you Lions with your sight help to assure that no poor little blind or deaf child go unaided? Will you Lions become KNIGHTS OF THE BLIND"? Ever since then Lions have worked to cure all preventable blindness in the world. That effort reached its height when in 1993-94 Lions all over the world raised over 140 Million dollars in "Campaign Sight First" to help cure all preventable blindness in the world. In 1945 three of Lions Clubs International Leaders helped write the service portion of the charter for the United Nations. Ever since the UN has recognize the Lions contributions with a Lions at the UNITED NATIONS day, the only service club so recognized. Lions Clubs are now in 183 countries with over 1.4 Million members.

The Heppner Lions Club was chartered April 4, 1974 with 25 charter members. Since then they have been busy serving their community. One of their first projects was to raise the funds and install solar heating for the Old Heppner Swimming Pool. One of their next major efforts was the building of the track at the Heppner High School. Even though the club doesn't have as many members today as they did then, the members keep busy serving the community of Heppner to the best of their abilities. Making them one of the most active clubs for their size in the state of Oregon. In 1993-1994 the Heppner Lions Club had the honor to have one of their members elected as District Governor for District 36 G. They keep an active part in their District and Multiple District by supporting not only LCIF and the Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation not only financially but by loaning one of their members to act as a trustee on the OLS&HF Board of directors. Heppner also has had one member serve as District Governor of District 36 G in 1993-1994.  That member was Roger C. Trueax who now serves as OLS&HF Trustee and is a candidate for Chairman of The Council of Governors for MD 36 for 2000-2001.
